The other Etched Cities
Thursday, July 17th, 2008 at 8:15 amIn which Gwynn is a strong female character, or in which there are no scenes of really explicit violence. I wanted there to be wide scope for readers to interpret the text, but sometimes I run into responses that make me wonder whether there really are infinite realities out there. (And therefore, which book would be the original…?)

The original is the one you penned first.
if you were to write stuff that happened before the events of TEC, or a twisted altered version it’s not the original.

You’re assuming time is always linear and that “I” didn’t pen the others. Maybe there are alt.authors in alt.realities who write alt.books…

I once had a dream with a supernatural female (well, actually, I think the gender was mutable, but for most of the dream he/she was female) character who I thought must either be Gwynn or Aidan. There was a child empress in elaborate Chinese robes she was either trying to kill or save. I don’t actually know which. I just remember her sort of melting up from the ground behind the child and looking very sinister.

That’s strange… re the novella I’m working on, something similar is happening - with the child, I mean. Gwynn definitely still has Gwynn Junior. And I don’t know yet whether he wants to kill or save the child.
In my head there’s a being I call the Swamp Angel. She’s more female than male, but fairly androgynous, and has the long black hair and white skin I’m obsessed with. Her eyes are moonstone-coloured. She lives in a dark swamp and seems to preside over the process of decayed matter turning into flowers and other living things. Which seems a benign occupation, but she is unaccountably rather sinister, so I sometimes wonder whether in her past she had a habit of dragging people down into the swamp so that they could be turned into nice new flowers.

There was a lot of water in that dream, too, she kept coming out of water. There was a pretty spring at the bottom of a canyon with a waterfall, and there was some… weird… mucky body of water in an abandoned city. But that was about the point that the dream fell apart and the next thing I knew I was wandering around a dark theater looking for my coat…

There’s a weird mucky body of water across from our apartment. They pulled down the little old house that was there and haven’t started building anything else. It’s the rainy season, so the block of dirt and rubble is flooded with water. It will become a mosquito hazard if it’s left. (If I suddenly drop off the face of the earth, you’ll know I died of dengue fever.) Sadly, I haven’t even seen a swamp angel there.
