Remember Forage, my unicorn man? I found his castle! Though I thought of his as plainer in design, with smaller windows, the overgrowth of ivy, the wooded hillside behind and the scruffy grass in front are just the way I pictured it. It is Gwrych Castle (more pictures at link) in North Wales, a Gothic folly built in the 18th century on the site of an earlier castle. Intriguingly, it overlooks the Irish Sea. I say intriguingly because I imagined Forage’s castle to overlook the fictional Sea of Somerled. Somerled was a leader of the Scottish Isles in the 12th century. This is the old Kingdom of the Isles, and this is the Irish Sea. Somerled’s kingdom extended south as far as the Isle of Man, so the sea view from Gwrych Castle is close to Somerled’s territory.
