WIPs

I decided to make a scaled up version of blindfold guy. Here’s how he’s coming along. The pieces of him will need to go on a base, which will mean either extending his neck to the shoulders, cutting his hands off almost at the wrists, or making a sloping base. I can’t think of any other solutions (not keen to put him on sticks).

This fairy or goblin is the focus of a piece that will ultimately be quite large. As usual, the camera makes his head look big.

I started off with a soft oil clay “sketch” model to help me decide on proportions:

Then I made a new armature and got going with the wax. I’ve got three thoughts about his pose: playing a small flute two-handed (as above), playing a large, strange goblin flute two-handed, or playing one-handed and the other hand supporting him, or just hovering.

I think I like the version with the free hand best. The flute can be more more goblinesque. When I’m sure of proportions and the arm pose I’ll adjust the angle of the torso and shoulders.

  1. I love the hands of the blindfold guy and I entirely adore the ecstatic look on the goblins’ face. He’s playing to an inner Pan.

    • Those hands are very similar to dancing Pan’s hands — they may be making repeat appearances in future, too! XD

I had a different plan for the goblin’s face, but he just sort of made himself. My job today is to try and finish his face, so I’m procrastinating, as one side is different to the other and I ought to make them more similar, which of course will change his look slightly. I’ve been here before…

      (ETA: think I did it!)

      • Obviously those are my dream hands you keep re-using! I hope the goblin retains that look of deep pleasure, but if he doesn’t, then he will be otherwise interesting so I shall only complain a little…

  2. I find the hands you sculpt are always very expressive and strange, was a bit sad when Pan lost his original bigger hands. Prefer goblin with two hands on the flute.

    • My teacher emphasised that hands are important, so I try to do a good job. This guy will definitely have big hands. There might be a reason to have one hand lowered, but I actually need to make the thing he’s squatting on before deciding!
